While on his mission, Sean surprised the whole family by writting poetry.

My daughters love to write but my son has always avoided reading and writting. I would like to share his poems with you.

FATHER I'M HOME

Though the road is long,
And the path be narrow,
But sure and true it be,
May my legs be strong,
And my mind be sharp,
So they may guide my way.

I see my goal so far away
I wish I had it now,
But if I wait, and suffer long
My reward will be a crown.

So as I go upon this path
And hurry toward my goal
May I always stay upon this road
So lost I'll never go

Though I trip and fall
Like all must do
Still forward, He will see.
So in that day with God I sit
And show I've served for Thee

Back home I go
My motto bold
RETURN WITH HONOR,
My God, My Father,
I've run my race
I'm home to be with Thee.

SEAN'S ROOM

In 1996, Sean left for a two year mission in Japan. We all missed him terribly. Usually when we think of Sean, we think of his comedy routines. He would keep us laughing all night as he reinacted some movie. He does a great Danny Devito in "Throw Mama From the Train". He would hug me and tell me "Owen loves his Mama". I sign my letters to him,
"Mama loves her Owen".

SEAN'S MOST EMBARASSING MOMENT
WHILE ON HIS MISSION

Stuck in a bathroom

A Japanese woman had asked the missionaries to tell her about our church. He said, "It's an hour an forty five minute ride (on a bike) over a mountain...

Well, about this time all the juice I had been given by her and others kicked in. Lucky that was the one thing I knew how to ask. She showed me where the bathroom was. And I couldn't open the door. So as I went to ask her how to get it open, one of the six year old students got it open. Boy did I feel weak.

I went in after feeling quit dumb. Then with the worst of luck, I got stuck in the bathroom. By this time I was feeling really stupid. After a little time had passed, she came to see what was wrong. And now with her broken English and my terrible Japanese, we tryed to open the door. No luck. I was really stuck in that little bathroom. She then went and called a locksmith and soon I was free. And now even more popular with the kids. Even more than ever they wanted to see the big dumb GaiJin." What a way to make an impression.

JUST A MINUTE

Just a minute I told another soul
Hoping, wishing he would wait for me
But still he went on going
Just a minute, I have no time for thee

Now I sit here with my sorrow
without a friend to hope for me,
for in that minute that he left me,
My heart was broken in three.

But if he would have waited
A friend for life he would have made.
So if you have, oh, just one minute
Won't you please, just stop for me.

THE FIGHT

Dear Dad,

Boy, I miss talking to you, letting you know my problems and asking for your advice. You know I always knew a mission would be hard, but I was never ready for this. I can honestly say that this has been the toughest two weeks of my life. Even when I sat sick in the hospital, never was fighting for my life as difficult as the fight with Satan.

He is not very friendly as you probably know. He has a terrible right hook of depression, while his left jab is ever so powerfully filled with discouragement and hate. He knows how to use his fancy footwork well and often.

You start to feel that all is lost. He has studied me even before I was born, and knows things about me that I don't even know. He is quick and has many fans. He is very willing to take a cheap shot here and there.

For one minute I was ready to throw in the towel. But the first round was over. I went running back to my corner. I told them, "It is hopeless. He has trained to long. I didn't put in enough time to prepare. If we wait a couple of days, or months, maybe then I will be ready."

Then my great and wise coach, Jesus Christ, said, "I have watched you train. You have worked hard, and you know as well as I that all of your life you have waited for this fight. Now look him in the eye, do not pay attention to his fans, or his great foot work. Ignore his cheap shots. And remember your defense for his right hook and his left jab. His punch is only strong if you let him hit you. Move and jab with prayer. Use your upper cut of scriptures, and remember the priesthood which gives you your great quickness and power over him. Study and learn his ways well. For your training has made you ready. But there is so much you can still learn here in the ring. Most of all, remember, I am here to give you strength when you fall. Always remember this, and you will stand victorious. It will take all 15 rounds, so don't forget to keep your strength until the end. No go and fight like you have been taught."

Dad, when I was down, he picked me up. And even though I wish I was with you, I hear your cheers from the crowd and it helps me to keep going. This round is good. Satan put in some good punches, but I too, got my share of hits in. And I am really starting to enjoy this fight. I'm learning so much. I know we will stand together soon.
